Couples getting hitched should check home insurance
1st July 2008
Wedding insurance is one thing, but Halifax is advising couples that are getting hitched to buy additional house insurance to cover all the expensive gifts they might receive.
The bank is warning those with home insurance that they are often "sum insured policies" which rely on the individual to notify their insurer if the cost of their home contents should increase.
Failing to declare items such as wedding rings, bride and bridesmaid dresses - as well as presents, which could add significant value to a home - could leave a person significantly underinsured.
Vicky Emmott, senior technical claims manager for Halifax Home Insurance, said: "Organising a wedding can be great fun, but also very stressful. The last thing people need is to discover they are not adequately insured when it matters most."
Unlimited home contents insurance cover can mean that consumers will never be underinsured "even if they suddenly increase the value of their home contents".
Alternatively, wedding insurance could provide protection for brides concerned about cover.
