Brides should shop for dresses at experienced retailers

19th September 2008

Women shopping for a wedding dress should make sure that they go to a retailer who knows what they are doing.

That is according to the Retail Bridalwear Association (RBA), which has warned brides that they face disappointment if they go somewhere with inexperienced staff.

Phillip Rathkey, secretary of the Retail Bridalwear Association, said that many women make the mistake of purchasing their gown from a website "that looks like it has a few cheap dresses on it".

Mr Rathkey said that this is not a very good idea as the dresses are so well fitted that women may order in their usual size when they actually need to go a couple of sizes up.

As such, they could be faced with the ordeal or returning it and then looking for another wedding dress.

He also warned that there are "there are so many scams on the internet that you have to be careful", as women can be "taken in by the glitzy pictures and the offer price without reading the terms and conditions carefully".

In 2007, Consumer Direct received more than 4,000 wedding-related complaints about hotels, caterers, jewellers, photographers, florists and travel agents, indicating that it is very important to take out wedding insurance.
