Expert warns overseas wedding insurance different from holiday insurance

12th August 2008

Those couples thinking about getting married abroad have been warned that there is a difference between holiday insurance and wedding insurance.

The British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA) has said that an overseas wedding insurance policy needs to provide cover for a number of things that a person would not normally take with them on holiday.

Peter Staddon, a spokesperson for BIBA, explained: "A wedding is different [from a holiday] and, as such, brings with it other problems, the dress, the rings, the wedding refinery."

Mr Staddon suggested that those getting married abroad should remember that overseas wedding insurance has to take into account that "there is a greater exposure regarding the wedding in respect of drink".

Couples concerned about bringing wedding gifts back may be able to get an increase their luggage allowance although many newlyweds wait until their return to receive presents.

Over half of people said they would consider getting married abroad and nearly 80 per cent thought a traditional white wedding might be more stressful to organise than getting married somewhere like the Caribbean.
