Couples advised to get insurance to cover their overseas wedding

8th September 2008

The UK's leading leisure travel company has said that couples getting married abroad should take out a "wedding top-up policy".

Although not expressly mentioning overseas wedding insurance, Thomson and First Choice has said that it is important that couples make sure they are covered for essentials on the big day.

Shona Swain, the general manager for long haul for Thomson and First Choice, said: "First Choice strongly advises all customers to take out travel insurance, and also advises getting a wedding top-up policy which covers wedding essentials such as rings, photography and wedding attire."

According to the National Cost of a Wedding Survey 2008, the average wedding in the UK now costs £20,273.

The biggest expense that couples have to endure is the wedding reception, which the survey found sets newlyweds back on average £7,724.

That sum includes £2,529 for the hire of the venue, £3,497 on catering, £1,242 on drinks and £456 on entertainment.
